Why motorcycle suspension needs servicing

Forks and rear shocks do not necessarily maintain the same behaviour throughout the life of a motorcycle. Use, time, operating conditions and component wear can gradually affect the way the suspension responds.

These changes are not always noticeable from one ride to the next. Suspension behaviour can deteriorate progressively, resulting in less precise or controlled responses under braking, acceleration, cornering or when dealing with uneven surfaces.

Motorcycle suspension servicing is intended to assess the condition of the components and address parts subject to maintenance or wear, restoring the suspension to correct working condition.

When should motorcycle suspension be serviced?

There is no single service interval that applies to every motorcycle and every rider. A road bike operates under different conditions from an Adventure motorcycle regularly used off-road, an Enduro bike or a Motocross bike.

Alongside the maintenance requirements of the specific suspension component, changes in behaviour can indicate that an inspection is appropriate. Signs worth investigating include:

• visible leaks or oil seepage;
• suspension response that feels less controlled than before;
• unusual diving, movement or suspension behaviour;
• a noticeable change compared with the way the suspension previously worked;
• suspension subjected to intensive or prolonged use.

None of these symptoms identifies a specific cause on its own. The component needs to be assessed to understand what requires attention and which type of service is actually appropriate.

Forks and rear shocks require specific servicing

Front and rear suspension work together to control the balance and behaviour of the motorcycle, but the fork and rear shock are different components. Servicing therefore needs to take into account the characteristics and actual condition of the specific component being worked on.

Suspension servicing and suspension tuning are not the same thing

Servicing is primarily concerned with the condition and correct operation of the suspension. Suspension tuning and preparation, on the other hand, starts from the characteristics of the motorcycle, the rider and the intended use to achieve suspension behaviour better suited to those specific requirements.

The two needs can overlap, but they should not be confused. A suspension component that requires maintenance does not automatically become better suited to the rider simply because it has been serviced. Likewise, suspension preparation should start from components that are in suitable working condition.
